A day at Aldeburgh Carnival

Another year, another Carnival and what a fantastic weekend it was!

Coloured bunting lined the skies as preparations began for the parade highlight on Monday 17 August. Businesses and houses dressed their windows and walls with lovingly prepared Disney decorations, to celebrate the 73rd Aldeburgh Carnival. Some too even dressed up; including Suffolk Cottage Holidays, who, in true Disney style, welcomed Minnie Mouse, Alice in Wonderland and Snow White to their high street shop for free flag making.

The sun shone down and the crowds soon descended onto the busy streets of the coastal town. Market sellers sold souvenirs and mementos, whilst children and adults alike took a ride on the fun fair (and donkeys!) near the Moot Hall. Many took part in the annual quiz, keeping their eyes peeled for unique objects in shop windows.

As the clock struck 3.30 pm the High Street was abuzz with activity as visitors and locals waited anxiously and excitedly for the familiar sound of the British Imperial Military Band, marking the start of the Carnival parade. Flags waved, children clapped and cheered as the floats and Disney characters danced up and down the street. Oohs and aahs sounded as the Carnival Queen (Amy Osbourne) and her two attendants (Isabelle and Bo Buzzard) gracefully moved along the street in their carriage, whilst hoots of excitement and dancing broke out as the Samba band performed their showcase. Cars and tractors were transformed into pirate ships and jungles, mobility scooters too were covered with tissue paper and cardboard: making the most of this family weekend. If you were lucky, you may have been able to catch a flying sweet, or be given a sticker or two.

After slaving away for many days and weeks, individual prizes were given out to those who had made a superb effort. Prizes were awarded for the best decorated house, best window display, best float and much more. To be in with the chance of winning yourself, why not enter for next year? Head to the website for more details.

As the day drew to a close the party headed to the beach, taking part in the annual Chinese lantern procession. The many lights of pastel colours looked so cosy and exciting, especially on a cool summer night. And of course, as always, the weekend was marked at an end by the firework display; a particularly mesmerising event as the colours danced in the reflection of the sea.

So yet again, another successful Carnival as contented families made their way back to their cars, alive with enthusiasm and memories of the day.

Never been to the Carnival yourself? This much loved family event is incredibly popular so it is strongly advised that you book your accommodation in advance! For a list of Aldeburgh cottages so perfect for the Carnival atmosphere, please click here.
